Research summary
Low blood pressure during surgery may be associated with poor outcomes after surgery, but is surprisingly common. Adequate blood pressure is required to maintain the perfusion of major organs for example the heart and kidneys. If blood pressure is insufficient, these organs can be damaged, leading to increased length of stay in hospital and increased costs. This two phase, feasibility study aims to describe the relationship between degree and duration of low blood pressure during hospital and hospital length of stay. In addition the study will allow for testing the feasibility of using Edwards Lifesciences Hypotension Predictive Index (HPI) to predict low blood pressure during surgery. Markers of kidney and heart damage will be measured and an economic evaluation will be performed to determine whether using the HPI technology would have potentially avoided damaging periods of low blood pressure and result in a cost-benefit.
