Research summary
All patients are starved for a minimum of 6 hours before major surgery. There is evidence in athletes that this can adversely affect cardiorespiratory function which has been shown to be an important determinant of outcome after major surgery. This study aims to assess whether cardiorespiratory function is affected by the routine preoperative starvation policy.
We plan to undertake a cardiopulmonary exercise test under similar conditions as the starvation policy states from the Royal College of anaesthetists and repeat the test on another day after the patient has taken carbohydrate drinks the day before and on the day of the test.REC name
