Research summary
Hydroxychloroquine is a well tolerated medication with minimal side effect profile. It is a standard treatment in cutaneous and scalp lichen planus and is sometimes used in oral lichen planus (OLP). However as there is limited published evidence to support its use in OLP, patients are often treated with systemic immunosuppression once topical therapies have failed. Hydroxychloroquine is a much safer therapy and we have found that it has a clear place in the management pathway for OLP. We wish to undertake a retrospective review of clinical notes to determine the effectiveness and side effect profile of hydroxychloroquine in oral lichen planus. We will assess to see if there is an improvement in oral disease severity scores and quality of life scores associated with hydroxychloroquine use. This is a retrospective review of anonymised data. No one outside of the direct care team will have any access to identifiable data.
