Research summary
White adipose tissue (or fat) controls our body’s metabolism and our appetite. When the normal function of fat declines this can lead to a number of cardiovascular problems including diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Despite its importance, relatively little is understood regarding how fat works normally or in disease. This project will use human fat taken from patients undergoing surgery. The fat will be used in a university laboratory to study how it works and understand what changes in disease. We will also use fat tissue to explore how it responds to different drugs that might prove useful in the future for tackling cardiovascular disease. This study will be insightful for cardiovascular disease and the identification of novel drug targets.
