  • Research summary

Asthma and other lung diseases are caused by excessive, aberrant inflammatory and immune reactions in the lung. The rising prevalence of airways diseases indicates that environmental factors are important in the development of these diseases, but the immunological mechanisms through which environmental factors promote diseases are poorly understood. These immune reactions can be modelled using white blood cells from peripheral blood. This study will continue our research using peripheral blood from healthy volunteers and those with lung diseases. This research is identifying mechanisms underlying these lung diseases and highlighting possible therapeutic strategies. [COVID-19 amendment 01/05/2020] Given the pressing and urgent need for research into the pathology of Covid-19 we are applying to amend our current studies into immune responses in asthma, COPD and respiratory disease to specifically include individuals who have previously been infected with SARS-Cov-2. Equally important, given the widespread nature of the epidemic, we wish to amend our exclusion criteria to specifically exclude healthy control individuals who have had covid-like symptoms since March 2020. 30 Individuals will be specifically recruited who have either had a confirmed PCR test for SARS-Cov-2 infection, or had symptoms which suggest SARS-Cov-2 infection. On screening, donors will be specifically asked about their symptom severity and dates of Covid-19 symptoms. Blood will only be collected following 1 month convalescence from main symptoms. 30 Healthy controls will also be asked to confirm a lack of Covid-19 symptoms since March 2020.\nThis study is being funded by Kings together.
