Research summary
Cochlear implants provide access to sound for severely to profoundly deaf adults and children. Although speech understanding in quiet can be excellent, cochlear implant users still struggle in background noise. Engineers are constantly working to enhance the speech processing strategies used in cochlear implants in order to improve outcomes in difficult listening situation. Two such strategies have recently been developed: Transient enhancement and Impulsive noise canceller.
