Research summary
Transition in learning disability (LD) health is when a young person goes from a specialist LD child and adolescent mental health service (LD CAMHS) to a specialist adult learning disability health service. Sometimes, this can be hard for a young person and their family. Because parents often help their children during this move, we want to know how this is for them.
For my study, I want to learn about the experience of parents supporting their child with the move from an LD CAMHS to an adult community learning disability service (CLDT). This will help us know how we can help families with transition and how we can make services better.
I would like to speak to 6 to 8 parents of young adults ages 17 to 21 years old who have an LD. Young adults will need to have moved or are moving from Starfish LD CAMHS to adult CLDT. Families will need to be under adult CLDT in the Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust. Families will need to have received support from Starfish and have a good understanding of English. I would also like to speak to families discharged from the service for at least six months.
I will interview parents that would like to be in the research. This interview can happen in person at their home, or at NCHC adult CLDT buildings. The interview can also happen online on Microsoft Teams. The interview will last between an hour to 1 hour 30 minutes. At the interview, I will ask parents about their experience of their child’s transition.
At the end of the study, I will give parents a £15 Amazon gift voucher for taking part. I can also give the summary of the research to parents if they would like it.
