Research summary
This research will explore how paramedics respond to patients with mental health issues, and manage their care needs. This will inform how paramedics work to improve care for patients who have mental health issues.
Paramedics are health care workers who provide care and treatment to patients. These patients can be either very ill or injured. Paramedics can also give a range of drugs and can carry out minor treatments. Some patients may have mental health issues, either diagnosed and/or behaviours that may be challenging, for example, anger and anxiety. There is little research about how paramedics, as frontline health professionals, care for mental health patients. This research will fill this gap in knowledge. It will provide information about how paramedics care for patients with mental health issues and identify how this care can be improved. This research will also inform education for paramedics by improving their understanding of care for mental health patients.
