  • Research summary

How do health care professionals support and follow up patients who have had a new diagnosis of atrial fibrillation? My interest in this research question arises from my employment as an advanced nurse practitioner within a general medical practice, and an increasing population of patients of whom, there is a significant proportion who are elderly. Many of these have morbidities or co-morbidities which impact on their everyday life, on their surrounding environment and healthcare needs. One disease area being atrial fibrillation, where there is evidence to support screening and detection. I therefore, purpose to investigate how these patients are supported when diagnosed at present within the general practice setting via a single qualitative semi-structured interview of practicing medical and non-medically trained health care professionals. The purposed interview will last 30-60 minutes in total and be preformed at the participants place of work. I propose to recruit within my local care commissioning group, therefore, the same local policies will be applicable. I propose to recruit outside my practice setting, therefore, reducing conflict between my roles. An Invitation letter, Participant information leaflet and consent form will be circulated to potential participants for each to view. As the study is part of my dissertation then the study length is eight months in total.
