Research summary
Regular physical activity is beneficial in the treatment and prevention of many conditions, but nearly half of all adults do not meet the current guidelines for the amount of physical activity that should be taken each week.
Currently patients on acute hospital wards do not routinely receive physical activity advice from healthcare staff. We believe that the time while patients are in hospital is an opportunity where they could receive advice about physical activity from staff.
We would like to know if patients are interested in receiving advice about physical activity during a hospital admission or if patients think this isn’t the right time and place to discuss physical activity.
If patients are interested in receiving physical activity advice, we would like to know what advice they would like to receive, who they would like to give them the advice, and the format they would like the advice to be in.
Over a two month period patients from an acute medical ward (ward B3) of the Queen’s Medical Centre will be recruited into the study. Participants who agree and consent to take part in the study will be asked to complete two short questionnaires and take part in an interview. This interview will be recorded. The data collected will be used to identify whether or not patients think the acute hospital admission is an appropriate time for them to receive advice about physical activity from staff. If patients do think it is, the data collected about the content, format, and delivery of advice will be used to plan interventions (such as information booklets) and be used to help educate the staff about how best to advise patients about physical activity.REC name
