Research summary
Post-TB health and wellbeing
Even after a person has completed treatment for tuberculosis (TB), they can experience significant problems with their health and wellbeing. Throughout the world, about one-half of all the problems relating to TB occur in survivors and include ill-health, disability or early death. Research shows that death rates are three times higher in TB survivors (TBS) and up to half of TB survivors who had lung TB may develop long-term lung damage. Mental health and financial and social wellbeing can also be affected.
Research is needed to help TB survivors in the UK
Although often thought to be a disease of the Victorian period, TB is a current and active health problem in the UK. Since 2000, over 100,000 people have been treated for TB in the UK and, of these, over 88,000 are alive today. However, we know little about this population and few studies have been done looking at the health and wellbeing of TB survivors in the UK.
Therefore, this study aims to describe the health and wellbeing of adult TB survivors in the UK and how they are currently cared for by TB services, in order to show whether their health needs are being met.How will the study be done?
We plan to investigate the health needs of TB survivors in the UK through the following:
1. Survey of TB services in the UK
We will send questionnaires to healthcare professionals working in TB services (clinics) asking about what kind of follow up and support they currently give to TB survivors.
2. Interviews and focus groups
Through these interactions, we will talk to TB survivors, carers of TB survivors and healthcare workers about their experiences and perspectives on health and care after TB.
3. Database analyses (separate work package, not requiring IRAS)REC name
