  • Research summary

Hypertension is a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the largest cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Over 13% of NHS patients are currently recorded on hypertension registers but the Health Survey for England (2012) found that over one third of patients on treatment are still above BP targets.

Our research team is funded by NIHR to develop and evaluate a web-based intervention that gives advice, support and tools to help patients to self-monitor and self-manage their hypertension. Adult patients with uncontrolled hypertension, who are currently receiving medication for hypertension control will be recruited to the HOME-BP study. The HOME BP trial aims to assess whether the online intervention results in better control of hypertension at a 12-month follow-up point, and to analyse the cost-effectiveness of this approach. The feasibility, acceptability, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of integrating a digital intervention (DI) with nurse support into primary care for the self-management of hypertension will also be evaluated, in comparison to usual care.

In summary the HOME-BP Study will comprise:
    1) Internal pilot trial: 60 participants (30 per arm) will be recruited from GP practices to confirm the acceptability and feasibility of the intervention, full trial protocol and study procedures.
    2) Single assessor blinded randomised controlled trial: A full randomised controlled trial will compare blood pressure management using the HOME-BP programme with nurse support to usual NHS care for patients with uncontrolled hypertension. A total of 574 participants will be recruited, 287 per arm from 60-100 GP practices
    3) Health economic modelling and a qualitative process analysis study will also be embedded in to the HOME-BP study.
