Research summary
We are investigating the effect of a nutritional supplement, beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), on muscle wasting during critical illness.
During this study, muscle ultrasound will be used to determine the degree of muscle wasting. Although this has already been shown by our group to be a reliable method of measuring muscle mass of the quadriceps, separate reliability data should be shown for those new to the technique. It is important to measure reliability with any measurement technique to ensure that each measurement, whether undertaken by one or more individuals, is consistent.
As such, we propose to determine the inter and intra-rater reliability for the measurement of the quadriceps muscle in both healthy and critically ill participants.
