  • Research summary

People living with dementia from minority ethnic groups in the UK and their carers often have different experiences in the later stages of the disease and towards the end of life. These experiences can include preferences for care, medication use, moving to a care home, hospital treatments, food and drink, using religious or spiritual services, and stopping treatments.

This qualitative interview study is looking at the differences in the experiences between different ethnic groups, rather than looking at minority ethnic groups as a whole. This includes accessing care, what better care at the later stages of dementia would look like, what helps or prevents this, and how health and social care services can support this. At the end we will develop a resource that will support people from minority ethnic groups and carers access care at the later stages of dementia and towards the end of life.

We will recruit: people with dementia, people who currently provide (or have previously provided) care or support for a family member or friend with dementia, who are willing to discuss issues relating to the end of life. We will recruit people with dementia from the following ethnic groups: Black African, Black Caribbean, Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani (including people of mixed ethnicity), and carers of people from these ethnic groups who have (or had) dementia. We are also looking for healthcare professionals who currently provide support for people with dementia and their carers, to talk about working with people from minority ethnic groups.
