Research summary
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a diverse group of illnesses that cause damage to the lungs through varying degrees of inflammation. ILD patients decline their levels of oxygen in the blood when they do exercises. For this reason, we want to evaluate if High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which divides the training into high-intensity exercise by resting periods and High Flow Nasal Oxygen(HFNO)improve the exercise capacity (EC), which will be assessed with an exercise test on a bicycle.
This is a Randomized, Controlled, Multicentre Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Study of 30 ILD patients, which will be randomized into 2 groups; the first group will be submitted to 8 weeks of a Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) program based on HIIT plus HFNO and the second group will also be submitted to 8 weeks of a PR program based on HIIT, but with traditional oxygen delivery. Which group will use HFNO or conventional oxygen will be randomly selected from a sealed envelope. All ILD patients referred to PR and those from the ILD clinic will be invited to participate.
The study will consist of 8 weeks of intervention in the clinic plus 1 day of evaluations before and after the intervention. Spending 1 hour per day, three times a week every second day during the intervention and 2 hours during the other 2 days of evaluations approximately. Among the evaluations are blood tests, exercise tests on a stationary bicycle to measure the EC, 2 questionnaires to be answered that measure quality of life and levels of anxiety and depression and a test to measure the muscle strength of the legs. During the intervention participants will pedal on a stationary bicycle for 30 minutes, then they will do exercises for their upper limbs using dumbbells and finally, they will receive 10 minutes of breathing exercises.REC name
