Research summary
Nutrition and physical activity have been studied in lung cancer generally, but there is a lack of evidence specifically looking at considering nutrition and physical activity of Patients with Mesothelioma (PwM). Understanding human behaviours in any healthcare setting is the first step in affecting change to improve outcomes. We propose to explore the health and lifestyle behaviours of people living with mesothelioma (PwM) with a specific focus on their experiences of appetite and physical activity using interviews. We will also develop an understanding of their nutritional status using a nutritional tool. Patients and their informal carers (family or relative) will be asked to take part in a maximum of two interviews. Patients will be asked to complete a nutritional tool to identify their nutritional status and will be referred for specialist nutritional advice, if needed. Healthcare professionals will be interviewed to understand their experiences of nutritional support/interventions utilised for PwM, as well as their views on health and lifestyle interventions for this patient cohort. The data will potentially inform the design of future projects to improve the outcomes of PwM.
