Research summary
Cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, is a major cause of death and disability around the world. It is known that people who have a high cholesterol level in their blood and those who have high blood pressure are more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke. Many studies suggest that what is often considered to be a normal cholesterol level and blood pressure, might still be too high. Even people who have normal or close to normal levels of cholesterol and blood pressure may have a heart attack or a stroke, especially if they are older, overweight, or have abnormal blood sugar levels or smoke. In this study we are testing two different medications; one that will lower cholesterol and one that will lower blood pressure. These medications have been shown to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people with more severe elevations in cholesterol and blood pressure levels. The purpose of the study is to find out if they could prevent such events also in people with normal or near normal cholesterol or blood pressure.
