Research summary
Hearing loss is a major public health concern. It is strongly associated with functional decline and a reduction in quality of life. Orthopaedic surgeons are exposed to high levels of noise when performing common surgical procedures. In particular the peak levels of noise experienced during arthroplasty surgery exceed internationally recommended guidelines. It is not known whether the cumulative effects of this noise exposure leads to an increase in the prevalence of hearing loss and tinnitus amongst senior orthopaedic surgeons.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a greater prevalence of hearing loss and tinnitus is seen amongst arthroplasty surgeons compared to their non-surgical colleagues.REC name
