Research summary
This research aims to compare the support and medical care provided in two local prisons for adult offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID) in England and Germany.
By drawing on a random sample of participants as well as implementing identical, standardised methods in the screening for ID among remand and sentenced prisoners, this study will produce for the first time statistically reliable data, allowing for a cross-national comparison. Furthermore, by using a mixed-method approach, this study will comprehensively inform on current medical practice regarding identification of prisoners with ID and planning and provision of medical treatment, care and support for this population during their imprisonment as well as post-prison. In this context, the impact of different pieces of contemporary legislation on proceedings concerning prisoners with ID will be examined (e.g. Equality Act, 2010; Mental Health Act, 2007). Finally, as part of this study, using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 4ed. (WAIS IV) in combination with the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales 2ed. (VABS II) in Britain, and the Emotionale-Kompetenz-Fragebogen (EKF) in Germany, on imprisoned adult offenders will be critically examined.REC name
