  • Research summary

In England vascular diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes are a leading cause of long-term ill health, disability and premature death. Currently these diseases affect over 4 million people, causing 170,000 deaths annually (36% of all deaths in England) and one fifth of all hospital admissions (Khunti et al., 2011).

Underlying risk factors for these long term conditions include smoking, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol (WHO, 2013). One potentially beneficial intervention to address these issues is a mobile community outreach strategy, delivered in an NHS (branded) health bus which could provide an effective way of delivering health promotion services directly to target groups.
This study aims to evaluate the effects of such a health intervention (a mobile health clinic) within two areas of London which contain high health risk, hard to reach populations, London Borough of (LB) Haringey and LB of Enfield. This collaborative study between the School of Health Sciences, City University London and North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, aims to evaluate a current health promotion strategy, where free health checks and referral to needed services (such as smoking cessation, health and fitness classes) are offered to clients from a mobile NHS health bus, located in a community setting (e.g. shopping centre car park). This study will use numerical data, which has already been collected on the bus from heath checks, and data from interviews conducted with a random selection of people who have had a health check on the mobile bus and agreed to participate in a follow-up interview. The interview will be used to provide further feedback on the service and to explore any actions or outcomes (e.g. visit to GP) by the participant as a result of the health check.
