Research summary
The study will look at the sedation practices of nurses and doctors who look after patients on ventilators in intensive care. This study will take place at two research sites, one in Australia and one in the UK. The study will collect data in three ways and compare the results.
Initially, data will be collected by using a focus group of nurses and doctors to discuss sedation practices. There will be one group discussion in the UK and one group discussion in Australia. The discussion will take place in person or online using webcams and will last up to 2 hours. The nurses and doctors will be given a voucher to say thank you.
The second way data will be collected is by watching the sedation practices of nurses and doctors. Staff will be observed looking after patients who require sedation and a ventilator. To do this, staff will be observed for up to six weeks in an intensive care unit in the UK, and up to six weeks in an intensive care unit in Australia. Throughout the observation period, nursing and medical notes will be reviewed to see what the nurses and doctors are documenting about sedation practice. This will include gathering information on the patient's age, sex, past medical history and reason for admission.
Finally, nurses and doctors will be interviewed individually. These interviews will involve health care professionals who have unique experiences and roles in sedation practice. This will take place in person or online using webcams. In total, there will be 15 interviews in the UK and 15 in Australia. The study is funded by the NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber, in partnership with Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, as part of the Clinical Doctoral Nurses and Allied Health Professionals cohort.
