  • Research summary

This study is being undertaken in partnership between the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions (NMAHP) Research Unit and the Scottish Government Analytical Services Division, National Care Experience Survey Programme. The aim of this study is to identify health problems experienced by women around 18 months after childbirth and to explore possible links between women's experiences of maternity care and their subsequent physical and mental health and wellbeing. The study follows up the cohort of women who responded to the 2013 national survey of women's experience of maternity care in Scotland http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2014/01/8489. Postal questionnaires were sent to a randomly selected sample of 4,964 women who gave birth in Scotland in February and March 2013. Overall 2,366 questionnaires were returned giving a survey response rate of 48%. As part of this questionnaire women were asked to indicate whether they were willing to be contacted to take part in follow up research, 1,601 women (69%) responded positively, these women will form the sample for this one year follow -up survey. The sample will first be checked by NHS Central Register and Patient Services Division for maternal or infant deaths, or address changes that may have occurred since the national survey questionnaire was returned. A questionnaire has been developed using pre-existing and validated questionnaires assessing women's physical and mental health, wellbeing and specific symptoms relating to childbirth related health problems. The questionnaire will be administered by a Scottish Government approved survey contractor.
