Research summary
Hallux valgus interphalangeus is a deformity of the big toe characterised by an abnormal (valgus) angulation between the two bones (proximal and distal phalanx) forming the end of the big toe. It is considered present if the two end bones (proximal and distal phalanx) forms an angle exceeding 10 degrees.
This deformity is mostly present in patients with bunions, where present, correction with an operation may be considered, so it is valuable to know if Hallux valgus interphalangeus can be assessed reliably before the operation.
This deformity can be assessed using few radiological methods including:
• Hallux interphalangeal angle
• Distal articular set angle
• The angle between the effective articular surface of the proximal and distal articular surfaces of the proximal phalanx of the hallux. The aim of the project is to investigate the reliability of the above mentioned radiological methods in the assessment of hallux interphalangeus angle. We have not found previous studies of this issue.
This project is designed to be a retrospective observational radiological project.
Patients who underwent bunion surgical correction in the period between Jan. 2015 and Jan. 2016 under the care of the senior surgeon (Mr J. Barrie) will be eligible for the project. The plain foot x-rays of those patients will be reviewed by three orthopaedic doctors, the angles above will be measured independently and re-measured in 4 weeks time. The accuracy and reliability of these measurements will be assessed. This will tell us which of these methods of measuring this angle is more accurate.
