  • Research summary

    The proposed study through working with Health Visitors and parents, aims 1) to explore the acceptability and feasibility of the Parental Supervised Toothbrushing (PSB) intervention to Health Visitors and parents of infants aged 9-12 months, and 2) to develop a suitable objective measure(s) of PSB adoption.
    Our preliminary work has refined the oral health advice and support Health Visitors provide to parents of young children aged 9-12 months old. This co-production work has included engagement with parents and Health Visitors to ensure the intervention and supporting materials are appropriate and relevant to the local population in Bradford. To ensure consistent delivery, the project has developed a bespoke training package for Health Visitors.
    From our existing intervention development work (Gray-Burrows et al., 2016) and systematic review of oral health promotion materials (Aliakbari E et al., 2017), we have a detailed understanding of the barriers to Parental Supervised Toothbrusing (PSB) adoption and a corresponding specification of the components to address these barriers and maximise parents’ PSB adoption. PSB behaviours include:
    • twice daily toothbrushing;
    • undertaken by parents;
    • using a fluoride toothpaste of appropriate strength and amount; and
    • from as soon as the first baby tooth erupts.
    This study, through working with Health Visitors and parents, will field test the PSB intervention developed to support parents of children aged 9-12 months to adopted appropriate toothbrushing behaviours. The intervention is delivered by Health Visitors.

    The study will:
    1) explore the acceptability and feasibility of the PSB intervention to Health Visitors and parents of infants aged 9-12 months, and
    2) develop a suitable objective measure(s) of PSB adoption.
