  • Research summary

Title: What are the experiences and challenges faced by young people(16-25) in the UK with prenatally acquired HIV as they grow into adulthood.

Evidence demonstrates that growing up with a stigmatised identity can hinder successful transition into adulthood (Halverson 2005, Furlong and Cartmel 2007). It has also been noted that for marginalised youth for example, those growing up with HIV, the process of transition and the task of creating a viable social identity may be compounded by various challenges (Halverson 2005).
The aim of this study is therefore to provide evidence to assist in supporting young people living with HIV since birth to successfully transition into adulthood. Focus will be on exploring how growing up with HIV can impact on transition into adulthood, the young people's experiences and challenges of growing up with HIV, their coping mechanism, factors helping or hindering coping with growing up with HIV and finally, their perception of a future with HIV..
Participants will be recruited from two settings; a specialist HIV clinic in the West Midlands and from a voluntary organisation that support children and families living with HIV in the UK.
The study is anticipated to commence from 1st June 2014 to 31 August 2015 and will adopt a qualitative inquiry approach. Two methods of data collection will be utilised; face to face or synchronous email semi structured interviews for the clinic sample and synchronous email semi-structured interviews for the voluntary organisation sample. Interviews will be 40-60 minutes long. Thematic qualitative data analysis will be used to analyse the collected data.
