Research summary
Children with complex health needs (CHNs) are a small but specific group within our population. These are children living with incurable, complex physical and often learning disabilities associated with conditions that developed before birth, around birth, following severe illness or injury. Parents of children CHNs are parents first, with many of the same joys and strains as other parents. Caring for these children though brings additional demands which may impact upon their physical and emotional health, their relationships, their financial circumstances and work opportunities. Yet how parents and families cope varies greatly. While some experience many on-going pressures of caring, others cope better and thrive. Resilience- the ability to cope well, to survive and grow in the face of life stresses, is a useful factor to consider when exploring parental responses to exceptional demands and research tells us that it is possible to increase resilience levels. This study seeks to develop a new intervention model to assist families to maintain or increase their resilience capacity. It has two components-a programme framework to guide the activities with parents and families, and a practitioner skills enhancement programme through which practitioners will develop the skills required to undertake family centred, strengths based resilience work.
