  • Research summary

This is a small N pilot case series study of a novel cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) group intervention for older adults with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). The intervention developed, the Overcoming Worry Group, is based on an extant and well-tested treatment for GAD (Dugas & Robichaud, 2007). The main purpose of this external pilot study is to inform the design of a future confirmatory study. Accordingly, this study will examine the acceptability, clinical effectiveness, feasibility, and potential mechanisms of change, of the Overcoming Worry Group for the treatment of GAD in older adults.

A mixed methods design will be used and quantitative (standardised outcome measures and self-report daily diaries) and qualitative (post-intervention interviews, facilitator focus groups, and dropout interviews) data collection methods will be used to strengthen study conclusions. A case series design will enable closer examination of the effects of the intervention as part of this study. Initial pilot work has been undertaken in preparation for the current study, and amendments to the intervention and the research design have been made on the basis of service user and facilitator feedback.
