Research summary
GHAT Artroom Evaluation
Background
Grampian Hospital Arts Trust (GHAT) has been leading to develop and implement the Artroom project in hospital settings. The Artroom is an art based social inclusion activity using participatory art as vehicle to engage patients. GHAT now plans to formally evaluate “Artroom” concept with the aim to learn lessons and further develop the project.
Purpose
To impact assess ‘Artroom’ to learn transferable lessons which could contribute in further planning and development of the programme and in other settings.
Research question
How Artroom interventions can support service users, staff and NHS Grampian to improve health and wellbeing outcomes in hospital settingsOverall aims
To evaluate Artroom project using mixed-methods (mainly qualitative and quantitative) research approaches by applying Scientific Realistic Evaluation (SRE) framework
Methodology
Scientific Realistic Evaluation (SRE) will be applied as an overall methodology and framework to impact assess Artroom programme. SRE is a theory and outcome based approach which is different from other mainstream evaluation approaches. It uses Context +Mechanism = Outcome (CMO) formula to measure how specific outcomes were achieved. It answers vital questions such as what worked, for whom, how an in what circumstances. Initial programme CMO theories are developed by considering literature review and programme documents and reports. The initial CMOs are then refined by testing empirically by using a range of data gathering methods.
Participants of the study
Patients, NHS hospital staff and GHAT Art Practitioners
Methods and data analysis
A mixed methods approach will be applied to collect data including in-depth interviews and an optional survey (if required later in the study) along with literature review to develop initial theoretical framework in form of CMOs. Qualitative data will be analysed using NVIVO10 software to develop thematic understanding before CMOs were refined. Survey data will be analysed using Microsoft Access or Survey Monkey tools.REC name
