Research summary
To test the effectiveness of components of a graded motor imagery programme for the reduction of phantom pain in amputation subjects. Theory predicts 3 stages:
1) Recognising whether pictures of a limb are R or L to aid mental representation of the absent limb.2) To imagine placing the phantom limb in the position shown in a selection of pictures.
3) To perform simultaneous movements with the phantom limb and the intact limb reflected in a mirror to represent the absent limb. Currently we do not know whether these components are all effective for the reduction of pain and in what order they should be presented.
