  • Research summary

The Scottish Government has recently sponsored the development of an intervention programme for sexual offenders in Scotland named Moving Forward, Making Changes (MFMC), based on the Good Lives Model (GLM) of sexual offending rehabilitation. The prospective study aims to consider fidelity monitoring within the programme by designing and assessing the reliability of a pilot checklist to measure facilitator fidelity, both to the content (e.g., adheres to the session learning goals) and the process (e.g., displays empathy, displays a flexible style), in GLM based group sexual offender treatment programmes in Scotland.

Before describing the proposed methodology of the study, the GLM will briefly be explained: The GLM is a strengths-based model of sexual offender rehabilitation that focuses on client’ strengths, in addition to risk factors, with a view to assisting them to identify and work towards positive goals in a pro-social manner.

In relation to methodology, the study will be broken into two parts: The first part of the research -- which has already received ethical approval from the University of Edinburgh Ethics Board -- will involve a Delphi Study: The Delphi study aims to seek expert opinion in an iterative structured manner using a series round of online questionnaires. The key features of the method are anonymity between participants with controlled feedback provided in a structured manner. The purpose of the Delphi method is to seek expert opinion on what facilitator qualities are important in GLM treatment. The fidelity checklist will then be designed based on the responses from the Delphi study. The second part of the study will involve the lead researcher and a principle forensic psychologist piloting the fidelity checklist with videotaped sessions from the new Scottish GLM Programme in the prison service. An Inter-rater reliably statistics will then be then be calculated to assess the reliability of the fidelity checklist.
