Research summary
Rehabilitation within palliative care helps people with an incurable illness to remain active and independent. Many hospices provide rehabilitation services, but there is little evidence to develop these further or understand what works best in which situations. The project aims to describe and categorise the needs of people entering hospice rehabilitation services, how current treatments address these needs, how to assess if a treatment has helped, and if certain groups or treatments are more likely to be helpful for different people.
350 people referred to rehabilitation services across leading hospices in London will take part. After initial assessments, people taking part will work alongside rehabilitation staff to set individualised goals for their treatment. We will record if these goals were achieved. We will report the type of goals people set, how many people achieved their goals following treatment, and if certain scenarios changed the level of goal achievement.
