Research summary
Falls are a common problem as we get older. They can be distressing to those who have fallen and their families. Most falls don’t result in a serious injury such as a broken bone. When they fall, some people are able to get up again. Others need help and call family, friends or an ambulance. We want to find out how people decide what to do when they fall and what affects that decision.
To do this:
• We will talk to around twelve older people who have had a fall but didn't injure themselves.
• A member of their family or a carer can also take part in the interview.
• A researcher will come to their home to do a one-off interview. This will take between 30 and 60 minutes.
• The interview will be recorded.
• We will also talk to one group of ambulance service staff and one group of rehabilitation staff to understand how they support and advise people that have had a fall and may be unable to get up.
We will use the information from this study to develop an intervention that we would test in a future study to see if it could improve patient outcomes and costs.REC name
