Research summary
As part of our large imaging genetic study entitled "Genetic Studies of the Heart and Circulation (GENSCAN I)" we invited volunteers to consent to being contacted for potential further non-invasive and non-ionising radiation studies. We are now at the point that we wish to invite volunteers who consented to re-contact for further evaluation of their heart, circulation and metabolism. The new studies build on the findings of the initial study but take investigations to a new, targeted and deep level to inform on human health and disease.
Study aims:
1. To develop and validate assays to identify genetic variations in the principle genes currently known to be associated with arrhythmia and cardiomyopathies in a screening population without known ischaemic heart disease
2. To classify mutations in these genes, as well as in other candidate genes involved in cardiac electromechanical function
3. To assess the role of these variants in risk stratification
4. To identify potential therapeutic targets in these genetic and molecular pathways
5. To model the electromechanical determinants of cardiac structure and function.
