  • Research summary

    Background:
Aspects of genetics/genomics are increasingly being integrated into healthcare. Nurses are instrumental and crucial for the successful implementation of genomics in the healthcare system. The review of the literature suggests that nurses yet to achieve genomics competency and become confident in this area. Nurses lack of genomics proficiency is the indication that genomics yet to be implemented in nurses’ clinical practice and subsequently in the healthcare system. The literature review has also demonstrated an evidential gap in the context of the implementation of genomics in nursing practice. It has also shown that factors that warrant systematic and theoretical investigation of the successful implementation of knowledge yet to be fully understood. Moreover, a critical analysis of the dearth of studies has shown that, in the context of the implementation of genomics in nursing practice, a holistic investigation of the determinant of successful implementation of innovation recommended by implementation research frameworks and theories has been overlooked. Besides, there is no systematic and scientific evidence of how successfully implement genomics in nursing practice and what the best strategy is.

    Aim:
To investigate and design an evidence-based genomics implementation strategy for nursing practice to facilitate the process of genomics uptake by nurses in day to day practice.

    Method:
Four implementation research frameworks (I-PARIHS Framework, Quality implementation framework, Knowledge to Action Framework and Outcome for Implementation Framework) will guide this study; Grounded Theory method will be employed. The main focus of this study is to develop and design an innovative, evidence-based genomics implementation strategy for nurses. A non-randomised sampling method will be used to recruit participants. Participants will be forty nursing associates, staff nurses, genomics champion nurses, senior staff nurses, nurse managers, service managers, deputy service managers, and experts in the area of genomics and nursing working in England. Semi-structured face to face, video or phone interviews will be used to collect data. Data collected will be analysed through a coding system. Findings will be used to design a genomics implementation strategy for nurses.

    Significance:
It is hypothesised that this project will address the knowledge gaps in this area through:
    1. providing an innovative, evidence-based genomics implementation strategy for current and future nurses at the organisational and individual level,
    2. building upon the previous research on this area,
    3. promoting the implementation of genomics into practice and healthcare system,
    4. promoting the dissemination of the genomics into other contexts,
    5. developing awareness and understanding of this knowledge,
    6. and identifying gaps, future studies, reviews or investigations.
