  • Research summary

Lung cancer mortality is socioeconomically patterned: if you live in a deprived area, you are less likely to survive lung cancer. These higher rates of mortality are not fully accounted for by the socioeconomic gradient in lung cancer incidence. One thing that has been shown to statistically explain these inequalities is treatment receipt: people living in deprived communities are less likely to initiate lung cancer treatment than people living affluent communities. This association remains after adjusting for multimorbidity and stage of cancer diagnosis. The reasons for this are unknown. Our proposed research seeks to understand why this occurs. Specifically, we are interested in exploring perceptions, knowledge, beliefs and understanding of patients with low socioeconomic status towards lung cancer and its treatment. We are also interested in exploring how low socioeconomic status might influence clinicians’ approach to lung cancer treatment decision-making. We will conduct semi-structured interviews with patients with lung cancer from more deprived areas, as well as clinicians involved in lung cancer treatment decision-making to develop an understanding of how and why treatment decisions are made for people living in deprived communities.
