Research summary
This study aims to explore the views and experiences of patients, their families, the public and healthcare professionals’ on the use of gene therapy in the management of heart failure.
Previous work on gene therapy and its acceptability to patients have largely used a quantitative approach with survey research collected more than a decade ago. With more recent developments and success in biotechnology these findings are unlikely to reflect the views and experiences of today’s patients and public. Efforts are needed to understand and then improve public involvement so new technology can transfer successfully into evidence-based healthcare.
The study will use semi-structured interviews with patients, their families, healthcare professionals and with the public to explore and describe their views and experiences. We will use our increased understanding of some of the influences on people’s views of gene therapy to tailor our health information and so improve the acceptability of such developments in healthcare.
