Research summary
Gene copy number alterations are known to be associated to cancer, and a significant amount of research has been carried out to understand the role of these alterations. As part of the METABRIC (Molecular Taxonomy of Breast Cancer International Consortium) project, DNA microarray data from 1,980 breast tumours was collected. This data can be analysed by computer and many statistical algorithms have been developed to analyse data from these types of microarray experiments. \n\nHowever, the analysis for copy number alterations is complicated due to the varying amounts of noise in different samples and the need to combine two sources of information (log ratios and minor allele frequencies) in order to accurately call copy numbers. \n\nIt is proposed that this task can be easily performed by the human eye, based on our ability to detect patterns. However, the large amount of data that needs to be reviewed is a limiting factor to completion of this research. \n\nIn this project the DNA microarray data will be transformed into a computer game format, to be played by members of the public, who will assist in detecting patterns. The proposed Gene Game will be developed in collaboration with the Citizen Science Alliance and use their well established platform, Zooniverse.
