  • Research summary

We have previously conducted a clinical study investigating the effect of vitamin D supplementation on severe asthma, and in particular patients whose asthma does not respond to steroids. As part of the study participants agreed to donate blood samples for immunological studies including gene expression studies. It was not possible to do the gene expression studies whilst the study was ongoing - this new ethical approval will allow us to conduct the planned gene expression studies. We hope that by identifying genes differentially expressed in severe asthma, in particular those associated with steroid resistance and vitamin D response, we will be able advance our understanding of severe asthma, and in future develop new therapies.
