Research summary
Dementia describes a range of symptoms caused by problems affecting the brain, that affect a person’s memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. It is thought that there are 50 million people with Alzheimer’s disease worldwide, with three quarters not yet diagnosed and able to receive treatment. At the moment, a person must have several medical tests to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. These tests are expensive, must be done in hospitals or GP surgeries, and take up a lot of time, both for patients and healthcare staff.
Research has shown that specially designed computer games can pick up changes in the brain cells that are first affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. This study will test G:DATA, a simple computer game that has been designed to diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease. G:DATA will be tested in three different groups of people, some of whom have Alzheimer’s Disease. It will look at whether the results of G:DATA match the results of tests that are used to diagnose people with Alzheimer’s Disease now. We will also ask patients and healthcare staff for their views on the G:DATA game as part of the study.
