  • Research summary

The GAP-6 Global Initiative is a global consortium of approximately 16 oncology referral, diagnosis and treatment centres in 6 countries worldwide, with the aim to recruit 250 men to discover why prostate cancer recurs after curative treatment.

The research will involve studies investigating the biology of prostate cancer and factors that are associated with how the disease behaves when they recur and the effects of treatment. In particular, differences in prostate cancer recurrence between men with a limited number of sites of disease recurrence ("oligometastatic") compared to those with widespread disease recurrence ("polymetastatic").

Ultimately, it is hoped that the research will enable the identification of a biological marker(s) that can guide and direct care and appropriate treatment.

In order to address these research objectives, biological samples from men with a new diagnosis of prostate cancer ("De novo") will be compared with samples taken from men with recurrent (Oligo/Polyrecurrent) prostate cancer. These samples will comprise those which were taken as part of the patient's routine clinical care, such as tumour tissue taken for a biopsy to confirm a diagnosis of cancer, as well as some new samples, such as blood from which plasma can be obtained and is referred to as a "liquid biopsy".

This protocol and ethics application relates specifically to the UK's participation in the GAP-6 Global Initiative and the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will be both Sponsor and the sole participating site for the UK.

Biological samples obtained under the research will be shipped to the University of California, USA for analaysis.

Data collected under the research will be analysed by members of the GAP-6 Global Initiative consortium.
