Research summary
We intend to perform an observational study of patients who attend our bone treatment unit to have intravenous bisphosphonate treatment for either osteoporosis or Paget??s disease of bone. We will be studying the activity of the patient's peripheral white blood cells, in particular the activity of the Gamma Delta T cells, and reviewing their quality of life. Blood samples will be taken immediately prior to treatment, 24 hours after treatment, 72 hours after treatment and 14 days after treatment from patients who are receiving their first infusions of intravenous bisphosphonate. The participants will be asked to record any symptoms they have following their treatment. When the participants attend for the blood sampling they will be asked to complete a simple questionnaire to measure quality of life. We are investigating whether there is a relationship between the activity of Gamma Delta T cells and the acute phase reaction which can occur after a first dose of intravenous bisphosphonate.
