Research summary
Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) encompass a range of non-inflammatory and inflammatory conditions affecting joints and are a major source of pain, disability and mental health issues. Since most of the inflammation occurs locally at the joint level, the ability to study disease mechanisms and identify potential new therapeutic targets requires the ability to directly access and analyse tissue from the affected sites. By systematically collecting and studying minimally invasive synovial biopsies of inflamed joints in patients with these conditions, in line with processes being established in academic centres across the UK and globally, G-SYNC will significantly advance the understanding of these RMDs and facilitate discoveries of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets, leading to improved outcomes for patients with these conditions. G-SYNC will also collect relevant demographic, clinical and radiological information on participants to ensure the required context for tissue analysis and interpretation. In addition, depending on the condition and research questions, with participants’ permission, other relevant biological samples may be collected, including cellular and genetic material extracted from whole blood, serum, urine and skin tissue.
