Research summary
Managing life with type 1 diabetes mellitus involves regular clinic visits to receive support with blood glucose therapy management, which is time consuming and often involves time off work and longer travels to the specialized diabetes clinic. With the advances in information and telecommunications technologies (ICT) there is reason to hope that ICT will facilitate long term clinical management of T1DM by offering new tools for communication between T1DM patient and health care professional (HCP).
Modern technical devices and ICT already form a substantial part of T1DM management, e.g. the download of glucometers and insulin pumps at clinic visits, contacting health care professionals (HCP) via email, seeking help and peer group support at online forums and professional homepages.
We aim to ask 500 people with T1DM about their attitudes on the future use of ICT in their diabetes clinics by means of a fully anonymised online survey. Patients from King's College Hospital London, UK and Hietzing Hospital Vienna (Austria) will be sent the link to the survey via email, T1DM patient online platform administrators will be sent the link as well, so they could post it on their platform.
The survey includes general questions (e.g. age, travel to clinic, etc.), questions regarding the diabetes (e.g. therapy modality, complications, etc.) and questions built around the following themes in the context of future use of ICT: Relationship with health care professional, confidence using technology, trust in data protection, practical benefit through ICT, worries about intrusion of patient’s private sphere and general acceptance of ICT.
The aim of this survey is to find out more about the attitudes of people with T1DM towards the future involvement of ICT in their communication with HCP of their diabetes care centre to give guidance for future development of communication in routine T1DM clinics.REC name
