  • Research summary

The ’Mild Cognitive Impairment Questionnaire’ (MCQ) is a 13 item patient reported outcome measure (PROM) developed to assess health related quality of life in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (a condition between normal cognition and dementia). The purpose of this study is to explore the properties of the MCQ further, particularly its ability to provide consistent results and to detect clinically meaningful change. If these properties are confirmed the MCQ has the potential to become a useful tool to evaluate interventions in MCI. No PROM developed specifically for this purpose in MCI exists at present.

The study will run for 24 months. Eligible participants will be people aged over 50 with a diagnosis of MCI confirmed by a specialist service in the past 12 months who are able to read and write in English. Recruitment will be from memory clinics (and analogous services) and an associated research database in Essex and Berkshire, UK. Potential participants recruited from clinics will be approached at their clinic appointment and given brief verbal and written information about the study. Those who indicate an interest in taking part will be given a copy of the MCQ to take away, complete at home and return in a pre-paid envelope. Those who return the first copy of the MCQ will be sent a second copy to complete and return approximately 2 weeks later and a final copy (together with approximately 5 additional questions regarding relevant changes in the intervening period) approximately 12 months later. Participants recruited from the research databases will be sent study information and the first MCQ by post, those who return the first MCQ wil be sent the second and third copies as for those recruited from clinics.
