Research summary
Adolescent girls have been targeted as a key group for increasing physical activity levels. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of an 8-week health intervention on the physical activity levels of adolescent girls and it will explore social support and self-efficacy as potential moderators of the effectiveness of the intervention. The intervention has been designed by a local service provider and will be implemented in secondary schools in Scotland over the coming academic year. The study will last 9 months. Data collection will occur at three separate time points during the school year. Baseline data will be collected in September, post-intervention data will be collected in December and 6-month follow up data will be collected in May. At each data collection point participants will be asked to wear a pedometer for 7 days. Upon returning the pedometer, participants will complete a questionnaire to measure the other variables (subjective physical activity levels, social support, self-efficacy and demographics).
