Research summary
Head and neck cancer is increasingly common despite reductions in smoking incidence. It is associated with significant morbidity and has a 5 year survival rate of only 50%. It presents a number of unique opportunities and challenges in research to improve diagnosis and clinical outcomes, including the concepts of field change and the importance of HPV in certain tumours. The biological complexity of these tumours dictates a need for continued access to fresh tissue for analysis and also for cells to be grown in culture. As head and neck cancer research is an integral part of the CRUK/YCR cancer centre in Sheffield, we wish to have a co-ordinated system, for access to fresh tissues for analysis and for the establishment of new cell cultures to facilitate this. We plan to collect tissues which are surplus to diagnostic requirements or waste tissue. The tissue will be used to generate new cultures of tumour and stromal cells, which can then be used in various functional assays. The availability of these resources will help develop our infrastructure in this important area of oncology research.
