Research summary
Our research is attempting to explain how the inflamed capsule tissue in patients with Adhesive
Capsulitis (or Frozen Shoulder as it is commonly known) heals. Frozen Shoulder is characterised by
spontaneous onset of shoulder pain accompanied by progressive stiffness and disability. It is usually self-
limiting but often has a prolonged course over two to three years. Understanding what is happening to the tissue at different stages of the disease process may assist us in developing new treatments for this condition in the future. The focus of this project therefore, is to improve understanding of the underlying biological processes occurring in patients with early-stage Frozen Shoulder. The project will involve collecting a small sample of the capsule which surrounds the shoulder joint from patients who are undergoing planned hydrodilataion of the shoulder capsule as part of their routine clinical care. This tissue will then be studied using cutting edge laboratory techniques to further our understanding of the inflammatory and resolution processes in early stage disease.
