Research summary
The research involves measuring the sensitivity profiles of platelets in a blood sample. This requires individual
platelets to be tested using a microfluidic analysis device. The device contains miniature channels for moving
platelets past a detector to measure whether they have become activated or not. Using this technology the
sensitivity profiles in response to different chemicals, so-called agonists, will be measured. Profiles from different
people (the cohort of participants involved in this study) will be compared to see if there are differences between
people and if these differences coincide with the following factors: age, body mass index and smoking habits. This
has the potential to identify 'platelet sensitivity profile signatures' that could be used as predictive biomarkers for
those at risk of heart disease.REC name
