Research summary
The impact of taste deprivation during critical illness is poorly understood. The sensation of taste is often neglected during these periods with the focus being on nutrition rather than oral intake for enjoyment or pleasure. This is usually because of safety concerns regarding poor swallowing ability and risks of aspiration, i.e nil by mouth (NBM) status. We hypothesise that addressing the neglect of taste and flavour in this cohort, thereby approaching 'sensori-balance', should have a positive effect on patient experience and therefore rehabilitation.
The study will ask people who have been in ICU and had a period of NBM status about their experience, using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire will be available online or can be completed with a member of the research team and will take about 10 minutes to complete. At the end of this questionnaire, participants will be asked if they would like to give any further feedback. This would involve an interview with a member of the research team with the aim of further exploring the participant's experience. Participants will also be offered the chance to be contacted about future trials on the same topic.
We will approach participants from two trusts which have an ICU and where members of the research team have a clinical role.
