  • Research summary

The project “Co-producing a ‘Food, with Care’ strategy for Cambridge Children’s Hospital” is a consultation carried out by the University of Hertfordshire for the Cambridge Children’s Hospital, a new hospital (being built as part of Cambridge University Hospital) that aims to develop a joined-up model of care that fully integrates physical and mental health to provide the very best care for children and young people aged 0-19. The hospital is at planning stage and is currently being co-designed by clinicians, staff, families and patients. This consultation – a collaborative partnership between the University of Hertfordshire, ARC East of England and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Trust – aims to inform the development of a ‘Food, with Care’ strategy: a food vision for the hospital that seeks to reflect the important role that food plays in a child or young person's recovery, but also in how it can support the wellbeing of the whole family. Starting with a co-produced ‘Food with Care’ manifesto, the strategy will focus on the nutritional, emotional, behavioural, social, cultural, educational and environmental aspects of food. The project aim is to investigate the food-related needs, opinions and experiences of stakeholders, and explore the potential barriers to addressing them, in order to co-produce a 'Food with Care' manifesto that will underpin the hospital's food strategy. This consultation will involve qualitative and ethnographic research methods, such as individual interviews, focus groups, workshops and participant observation with naturally occurring and existing groups of stakeholders, such as parents’ forums and staff teams, clinicians, and young people and their families with experience of being in a healthcare context.
